He succeeds Bernie van Niekerk, who, after 18 years leading the business, will now focus on Commerce Edge's international business expansion.

Mlalazi joins Commerce Edge's team of country heads from Australia, Africa outside of SA, and soon-to-be-established USA.

Procurement database can now pin-point most suitable individual

AndreBasson.jpgCIPS Africa and the Database of Procurement professionals have combined their recruitment efforts and created the CIPS Database of Procurement Professionals™ (The Database).

The Database leverages the CIPS Competency Evaluation process and the Database of Procurement Professionals™, database operator André Basson told SmartProcurement.

Editorial Board Member to Chair CIPS Africa Board

Douglas Boateng.jpgDouglas Boateng, SmartProcurement editorial board member and CEO of advisory company PanAvest International, has been elected Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply’s (CIPS) Africa Strategic Advisory Board.

This follows CIPS’s adoption of the One Africa strategy, under which the procurement body’s sub-Saharan Africa operations will be managed from South Africa.

Forecasting making way for customer engagement

Flexibility.jpgIncreased flexibility, agility and responsiveness has been cited as the top medium-term business objective by respondents to the 2012 SupplyChainForesight survey, sponsored by Barloworld Logistics.

The fact that using the supply chain as more of a competitive advantage was selected a close second is evidence that these two objectives are closely interlinked, and demonstrates the closer alignment of business and supply chain strategy over the last few years, said the report.

Procurement largest area of Supply Chain recruitment for last 5 years

Offering_hand.jpgProcurement has been the largest area of recruitment for the last five years across Supply Chain Management (SCM) recruitment, Chantal Kading, assessment and career consultant with PeopleShop, tells SmartProcurement.

Build strong relationships with SCM recruiters to advance your supply chain

Clarence_Manuhwa.jpgOrganisations willing to apply the same procurement processes to recruiting human capital as they do to other processes are making big strides to advancing their supply chains, Clarence Manuhwa of TechPro Personnel, tells SmartProcurement.

Positioning yourself as a procurement leader in times of turmoil

Stand out.pngIn times of economic and political turmoil, consumers, employees and constituencies will always look to leadership for some level of direction. It is against this backdrop that the latest Edelman Trust Barometer is a cause for alarm as it details a steep decline in global trust in leadership.

However, Zach Mogotsi, Branch Manager of TechPro Personnel, tells SmartProcurement that this is the time for innovative Supply Chain leaders to shine.

Distribution and logistics' Q4 employment up

Help wanted.jpgDistribution and logistics are among the sectors of the economy that employed more people during the last quarter of 2011 compared with Q3.

Developing a winning Supply Chain career in 2012

Max Smeiman.jpgWhilst we were slaving away, optimising our supply chain widget world, a few Wall Street wizards created yet another recipe for fool’s gold. Consequently, our supply chain world is faced with some harsh realities as the world heads deeper into recession with global leaders struggling to estimate where the bottom is.

But what does this mean for supply chain people? Max Smeiman, Supply ChainCoach CEO, has some advice for supply chain professionals in this month’s SmartProcurement.

P&SM talent still in demand despite SA's employment challenges

recruitment_careers_main.jpgThe latest Quarterly Labour Force Service Survey reports that there was a slight improvement in South Africa’s labour market last year, with Statistics SA releasing that “between the 2nd and 3rd quarters of 2011, the South African unemployment rate declined by 0,7 percentage point to 25,0%”.  Yet, the Supply Chain, Distribution and Procurement recruitment market has boasted good, solid growth over the past two years. Natasha Pillay-Bemath, MD of Tech-Pro Personnel, tells SmartProcurement that “this illustrates that the urgent and real need for skilled Professionals in South Africa and globally persists. Competition for the right talent is still on.”

MTN Academy celebrates 1st MCIPS qualification achievement

Procurement and retention of talent - the challenges in SA

Recruitment challenges.jpgGlobal recruitment and talent retention is changing globally, not just in SA. According to Manpower, 46% of senior human resource managers surveyed in the latest global annual survey said that their talent gap was making it harder for their organization to implement its business strategy. Only 27% said that they had the talent they needed.

Alan Low of Purchasing Index discusses the challenges South Africa faces in this month’s SmartProcurement.

No more reading CVs - The Database of Procurement Professionals

AndreBasson.jpgEnjoy reading CVs? If you do, you’re pretty unique. The problem with CVs, apart from the fact that everyone’s layout and approach is different, is that a CV tells you what the candidate wants you to hear. Ever seen a CV that said “I don’t have a clue how to determine the TCO of an LHD machine”? And you won’t either, because a CV is prepared with a view to boost the candidate’s chances of being considered suitable for a position on offer. Fact is, if you are looking for procurement staff, you do not have to read a CV ever again, unless you really want to, and then it should only be the two or three that made it to the short list.

After a 30-year career in procurement, Andre Basson began a project to change the way procurement people are recruited. The outcome is the Database of Procurement Professionals©. Andre spoke to SmartProcurement about how he hopes the database will change Procurement recruitment.

HR - Managing the skills recruitment process in today's RSA

Do you understand how effective your recruitment rates are in the wider context of the recruitment process?

In this month’s SmartProcurement Karen van Staden of Purchasing Index (PI) asks how important is it for organisations to understand the wider context in which recruitment operates?

Interim Chief Procurement Officer appointed at troubled State Owned Enterprise

Ashney Chetty.jpgState-owned Broadband Infraco has appointed an interim Chief Procurement Officer (CPO) while the network infrastructure organisation realigns itself after an internal audit revealed serious flaws in its business practices, CEO Dr. Andrew Shaw told SmartProcurement.

Ashney Chetty has been acting as CPO since April 18 and will overhaul the SOE's procurement practices, among which is ensuring Infraco complies with the regulations of the PFMA.

Unleashing employee potential through change management

Change management.jpgManagers can deliberately initiate organisational change. It can either evolve gradually within the department, be imposed by specific and compelling changes in policy and procedures, or arise from external forces, Ronald Mlalazi (MCIPS), Education Manager at Commerce Edge Academy, tells SmartProcurement.

Tips for managing Recruitment Agencies during skills shortages

Recruitment.jpgMost South African organisations have only just started recruiting new staff after an employment freeze for the last 18 to 24 months. Purchasing Index (PI) tells SmartProcurement that many may have been lulled into a false sense of safety that the skills base in South Africa is relatively robust.
