Supplier transformation initiative in engineering and manufacturing to be introduced

manufacturing_engineering_support.jpgA transformation initiative for small businesses in engineering and manufacturing, the Empowered Engineering and Manufacturing Initiative (EEMI), will be launched in September.

The initiative is a collaboration between Smart Procurement World, the Absa Enterprise and Supplier Development Expo and the Steel and Engineering Industries Federation of Southern Africa (SEIFSA).

The initiative is positioned as a platform for industry players to share opportunities and challenges for small and medium empowered organisations, and drive enterprise and supplier development (ESD) partnerships (funding, training, mentoring and support) and other important focus areas in this sector.

The EEMI will be launched at the Smart Procurement World Indaba and Absa ESD Expo on 19 September 2017 in Johannesburg.

Economic and industry progress on the continent requires existing multinational organisations, SOEs, OEMs and industrial pioneers to identify high-potential organisations within their supply chains or industry chains as beneficiaries for development.

Owing to fewer black-owned industrial organisations existing in the sector and limited experience of these entities, it is important for leading organisations to identify, secure and set aside developmental initiatives to support the growth of empowered organisations for the continent.

Kaizer_Nyatsumba_SEIFSA.jpg“SEIFSA supports and endorses Smart Procurement World’s launch of the Empowered Engineering and Manufacturing Initiative,” said Kaizer Nyatsumba, SEIFSA CEO.

“It is important to employ tangible strategies to provide platforms that develop and nurture ESD partnerships between established businesses and empowered small to medium-sized enterprises,” said Nyatsumba.

“Smart Procurement World is pleased to anchor our event with the focus of EEMI, in order to grow a collaborative approach to developing small black-owned businesses and suppliers. With a collaborative-development approach more can be done to quickly progress potential businesses to meet the supply chain needs of large corporates requiring specialist engineering and manufacturing capability. We welcome SEIFSA as the anchor body of this initiative,” says Debbie Tagg, COO, Smart Procurement World.

Companies such as Arcelor Mittal, GE, Ceramic Industries, Denel, South 32, Petra Diamonds, Royal Bafokeng and Scaw Metals are already partners to the Smart Procurement World and the Absa ESD Expo and will benefit from the focus of supplier development in this area.

Smart Procurement World and the Absa ESD Expo aim to assist procurement professionals better understand the demands placed on them to source local content and give them a platform to find SMMEs that can fit into business structures.

Conceived in 2006, the Smart Procurement World Indaba and ESD Expo now attracts more than 3000 attendees each year.
