“Get them toi-toing for continuous learning…”
South Africa’s trade unions and civil servants should be striking for greater involvement in continuous learning. This will help South Africa overcome its skill chasm far better than demands for State-crippling wage increases, said Ken Titmuss, SAPICS past president and vice chairperson.
“A prosperous future for South Africa depends on accelarated skills development and access to continous learning opportunities,” said Titmuss in his welcoming address at the SAPICS 3rd Annual Supply Chain Education Awards, which recognises and rewards educators, organisations and individulas that have played an important and supportive role in the development of supply chain education and skills development in Southern Africa.
SmartProcurement attended the awards ceremony, which is a collaboration between the the Federation of Supply Chain Management Associations (FSCMA) and the Association for Operations Management of Southern Africa (SAPICS).
SAPICS is a registered international associate of the Association for Operations Management (APICS), whose certifications are known around the world as a standard of professional competence in both business and manufacturing. SAPICS offers these international programmes that hold recognition in over 31 countries world wide.
The commendations awarded at the dinner are based on the top scores achieved in Africa in an examination sat by CSCP and CPIM students during 2008.

The CSCP program is a new industry educational certification programme created to meet the rapidly changing needs of the Supply chain Management field. The programme takes a broad view of the Supply Chain Management to encompass all the steps throughout the Supply chain. The CSCP provides students with the knowledge to effectively manage the integaration of these activities to maximise an organisation’s value chain.

The CPIM programme has enabled more than 75 000 manufacturing professionals to advance their careers. They understand essential terminology, concepts and strategies related to demand management, procurement and supplier planning.
STUDENT OF THE YEAR

Veli Madondwana of Hilfort Plastics – finished top of his class in an employer sponsored course, despite difficult circumstances.
Winner
Nomthi Ngobese – paid for her own CPIM qualification, which is a huge financial commitment considering the current R /$ exchange rate. She conducted research into her own company and quickly linked up with existing CPIM students so she could gain assistance in her studies. Her outstanding performance and committment to the SAPICS body of knowledge made her the deserving nominee.
HIGHER EDUCATION AND TRAINING STUDENT OF THE YEAR
Awarded to an individual that is studying through a HET institution, for outstanding committment, remarkable performance and overall achievement.

Nkateko Mathebula – considered for her four distinctions and her loyalty and consideration towards fellow students as well as personnel. Her cheerful and enthusiastic disposition was considered an inspiration to fellow students.

Shandy Ngoungoulou – considered for his seven distinctions and his firmness of principles and honesty. The diligent execution and motivated, purposeful attitute towards his studies and other activities set him apart from the other nominees.
LECTURER OF THE YEAR
Presented to a lecturer who dilligently supports their students in
a manner that extends beyond the call of duty, shows true committment to his/her students and has true enthusiasm for supply chain education.

Reuben Badana – A long standing lecturer that is and has always been incredibly passionate about personal development. Reuben makes each and every one of his students feel worthy of a professional qualificiaton.

Anita Jorge – “the number of nominations and the praise she received indicates that this lady knows how to educate. She is highly motivated and her classes are energised with the way that she interacts with the students. Anita’s enthusiasm is contagious and she continues to go about developing her body of knowledge,” said Titmuss.
OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT PROGRAM OF THE YEAR
Awarded to an outstanding project or program that has contributed significantly to education in the supply chain/operations management sector either through individuals or an education intervention that was conducted within an organisation.

CORPORATE EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR
There is an enormous amount of work being done to support the national skills strategy with a big emphasis on the development and placement of the unemployed. Nominees were judged on:
• Number of students educated.
• Evidence that the organisation supports the National Skills strategy.
• Training initiatives address all levels of employees within the organisation.
• Evidence that the attendance of courses/programs provides for career improvement or progression.
