Transnet has partnered with the Automotive Industry Development Center (AIDC) to implement a rapid process improvement (RPI) programme for identified Transnet suppliers in the manufacturing services sector.
The programme, facilitated in conjunction with the Lean Institute Africa (LIA), is a three-month workshop focused on five black-owned Transnet suppliers, improving the selected suppliers’ productivity, quality, cost and delivery by equipping suppliers with problem-solving skills.
Problem-solving techniques will improve the efficiency of the supplier’s processes (product or service quality), without them having to make significant investments.
The objective of this programme is to provide the Transnet suppliers with better knowledge and understanding of the methodology of problem solving and continuous improvement.
The programme seeks to develop suppliers through the application of various continuous improvement systems, with the aim of increasing the suppliers’ respective competitiveness compared with international suppliers.
The programme assists the companies by motivating and encouraging them to implement what they have learned during a practical and detailed four-day workshop facilitated by AIDC and LIA and hosted by one of the selected suppliers.
The programme is one of Transnet’s Enterprise Development (ED) pilot projects. Depending on the need of Transnet’s suppliers and the success of the programme, the number of participants may be increased.
With this ED initiative, Transnet aims to develop and improve suppliers’ productivity, quality, cost, and delivery and contribute to its objective of developing local black-owned suppliers.

The Automotive Industry Development Center is an implementation agency of the Gauteng Provincial Government’s Department of Economic Development that serves the South African automotive and advanced manufacturing industries, government `departments and government agencies on a national basis.

Lean Institute Africa’s aim is to promote lean management in South Africa and the rest of Africa by deepening the understanding of the effective implementation of lean management through research and practice.
