Sweeping probe of state corruption

THE Specil Investigating Unit (SIU) has announced the largest government investigation yet into tender fraud and corruption in seven state departments, including the South African Police Service (SAPS).

The probe, announced August 12, follows persistent complaints about corruption and tender fraud in the government.

Gauteng to act on supply chain corruption

The premier of Gauteng, the wealthiest province in South Africa, has announced a summit involving all sectors, aimed at addressing corruption in the supply chain.

Tender report cites 'criminal conspiracy'

GAUTENG Premier Nomvula Mokonyane yesterday released a long-awaited report on tender irregularities which revealed allegations of a “criminal conspiracy” in the awarding of tenders.

The report contains allegations that former public transport, roads and works department head Sibusiso Buthelezi contravened tender regulations and that his friends benefited from government tenders.

PETROSA: More allegations of dodgy dealings

State oil company PetroSA, which has been mired in controversy for five of its seven-year existence, is once again in the spotlight. New evidence has come to light in an investigation that shows links between politicians, businessmen and directors of the parastatal, reports the Financial Mail. 

PetroSA's Chief risk & compliance officer, Lerato Lesole claims he uncovered evidence which showed Mkhize and Nika had been involved in irregular tender practices. He also says that some directors have shareholdings in companies that had contracts with PetroSA. The FM has established independently that Mkhize has a shareholding in at least one company (of 26%) linked to a former contractor.

SABC troubles - irregular tenders?

Calls for investigation into whether the de facto owners of a consulting firm on the SABC's books, receiving millions, are the SABC's head of group management and strategy, Sipho Sithole, and axed chief executive Dali Mpofu...

Will calls for a full forensic investigation into "wastage" and mismanagement at the SABC reveal irregularities in the broadcaster's tender activites?

The Communications Workers Union and the Media Workers' Association of South Africa called for an immediate independent forensic audit into the SABC, which reported a financial loss of R839-million for the 2008/09 financial year.

A 14-page memorandum from the unions, alleging that "money has been wasted with impunity" at the SABC, has been handed to Parliament's portfolio committee.

The report said losses at the broadcaster in the past year were due to declining revenue and "unrestrained over-expenditure".

Among the unions' allegations was a series of payments, valued at several million rand, made to the company Gemini Consulting.

It needed to be established whether the empowerment company registered to Gemini Consulting was not de facto owned by the SABC's head of group management and strategy, Sipho Sithole, and axed chief executive Dali Mpofu, the memorandum read.
