Challenges in the permanent recruitment procurement process

Alan Low.pngAt the dawning of the next decade and as the recession in South Africa begins to gradually fade away, many organizations may tentatively consider appointing more staff. The recruitment market changed from a scarcity of skills on the open market in early 2008 into a relative glut during 2009, with many people sitting tight in their current jobs waiting for an improvement in the economy. Alan Low of Purchasing Index (PI) discusses the challenges the permanent recruitment procurement process faces in this month's SmartProcurement. Read more...

Does single source supply give customers leverage?

Single Source Supply.jpgDuring the Apartheid era, organisations often grew by purchasing or amalgamating with their competitors. As a result, in the 1990s, when organisations had access to the world stage, South Africa had and still has many industries that are controlled by monopolies or duopolies. Read more...

PC pricing - New opportunities

Alan Low - Latest.jpg“The supply of Personal Computers (PCs) remains a competitive market, particularly as sales volumes in South Africa may hold up better in 2009 than in other parts of the world, such as Europe and America. One can therefore expect suppliers to be particularly keen to increase market share in this sector. Purchasing Index (PI) continues to benchmark PC configurations, usage and prices amongst a growing number of organisations in various industry sectors; the results have become even more interesting”, Alan Low, CEO of Purchasing Index, told SmartProcurement. Why should Procurement organisations benchmark?

Scale.jpgOne of the first organisations to benchmark in the modern business world was Rank Xerox, who in the 1980s formed a dedicated team to find out how other organisations outside of the photocopying industry managed functions, such as transport. The results provided Xerox with invaluable insights into how to spend money more effectively and, in turn, save money. Read more...

Valuable spend information so important in the current economy

Price (150 x 100).jpgIt seems as though climate change and recent economic upheavals may have more in common than one might expect. It isn't so much that the weather is getting notably worse, but that short-term changes seem to be becoming more extreme. Recent fatal storms in KwaZulu-Natal this holiday season and flash floods in the Cape last year are just cases in point. Read more...

Cost reductions needed NOW!

Financial Markets.jpgSome of the trauma associated with the current global crisis has been due to the speed with which the markets have changed. Twelve weeks ago Platinum was trading at $2,300 an ounce, today it is at $840 – a drop of almost two thirds. With the precipitous decline in global stock markets organisational management are still trying to understand the effect that this will have on their profit and loss accounts and balance sheets in the next one to two years. Supply and Demand Theory back-firing on Human Resources in Procurement

Supply and Demand.jpgEconomic theory states that where supply is low, demand will be high.  The underlying premise is that a higher premium is paid for those high demand commodities where supply is low.  For the last couple of years, we have seen this trend play itself out time and time again when it comes to salaries paid for human resources.  However, statistics for the first quarter of this year are turning this theory on its head!, " Priscilla Gibson MD of Tech-Pro Personel tells SmartProcurement.

Does aggregation really lead to lower prices?

Viking (Is volume really king?)The idea that greater purchasing power delivers lower prices may be accepted wisdom in procurement circles, but it doesn’t always add up writes Alan Low, MD of Purchasing Index. The simple fact is that the “Viking” (volume is king) model, applied ad infinitum to B2B and B2G Purchasing, has not delivered consistently better prices than those being achieved by less volume-intensive purchasing organisations.

Temporary Recruitment Services - Sourcing Traps

alow.jpgThere has been a growing trend in many SA organizations to take on temporary staff instead of employing them permanently. The convenience for employers in doing this, including being able to call on resources as and when required, is often matched by the cost savings, e.g. not having to contribute to pensions, health care, etc. Alan Low MD of Purchasing Index tells SmartProcurement that Setting up temporary recruitment agency agreements was often the preserve of HR departments, without the active involvement of Procurement.
